Affect or effect? Influence and result
You are describing what background noise does to your concentration. The spelling changes when you change the sentence structure.
The short answer
For the common influence meaning, affect is a verb: “Noise affects my concentration.” Effect is a noun for the result: “Noise has an effect on my concentration.” Use affect + object, but an effect on + object.
Check the word’s job, then the words around it.
Affect describes influencing something; it takes the thing influenced directly. Effect names the influence or result, so it can follow a word such as an or a descriptive adjective. “A small effect on…” is a noun phrase. In “The noise affects me,” affects is the verb agreeing with the singular noise.
