ML English: report an input change without jumping to a conclusion

You inspected 200 input records today and 200 yesterday. Today, 12 have no region value; yesterday, none did. The model owner needs this observation, but you have not tested its effect on predictions.

The short answer

Pair an observation with a limit: “Today’s checked sample has 12 records with a missing region value; yesterday’s had none. We have not yet checked whether this affects predictions.” The second sentence prevents an input difference from becoming an unsupported performance claim.

State the observed change before discussing its possible effect.

Checked sample limits the statement to the records you inspected. Missing describes an absent value, not a value of zero. We have not yet checked whether introduces an unanswered question. It does not mean there is definitely an effect or definitely no effect. Avoid “the model is broken” when your evidence only describes input records.

Compare the examples

Observed sample

Of today’s 200 checked records, 12 have a missing region value.

Comparison

None of yesterday’s 200 checked records had a missing region value.

Unconfirmed effect

We have not yet checked whether this affects predictions.

Notice the difference

All records and counts are fictional. The lesson practices reporting language, not diagnosing a model or prescribing a technical fix.

Build the meaning step by step

01

Bound the observation

Of today’s 200 checked records, 12 have a missing region value.

02

Keep the unanswered question visible

We have not yet checked whether this affects predictions.

Question 1 of 3

Which phrase limits the claim to inspected records?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Which phrase limits the claim to inspected records?

    today’s checked sample

Checked sample identifies the actual scope of observation.

  2. “We have not yet checked whether this affects predictions.” What does this mean?

    The effect is still unconfirmed.

Not yet checked leaves the question open.

  3. Only the input samples were checked. Which claim goes beyond that evidence?

The missing values definitely caused every prediction to fail.

It adds an untested cause and a universal performance conclusion.

Put it into practice

Repair the monitoring note

Today’s checked 200-record sample has 12 missing region values; yesterday’s 200-record sample had none. Prediction impact has not been checked.

Original draft

The model is broken because the data changed.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

Today’s checked sample has 12 records with a missing region value; yesterday’s had none. We have not yet checked whether this affects predictions.

Neither alarm nor reassurance should exceed the evidence.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Can I say if instead of whether here?

Yes. After checked, both can introduce this yes-or-no question. Keep not yet so the sentence still says the effect is unconfirmed.

For example

We have not yet checked if this affects predictions.

Is an observed input change proof of worse predictions?

No. Report the observed change and the untested effect separately. This wording communicates what is known without turning an observation into an unsupported performance claim.

For example

We observed more missing values, but we have not checked the effect on predictions.

Take it into your day

Report the input evidence and label the prediction effect as unconfirmed.
