Cloud English: allocated versus used storage

A project lead asks whether “200 GB allocated” means the team has stored 200 GB of data. A clear reply keeps assigned space separate from space currently in use.

The short answer

“The workspace has 200 GB allocated, with 80 GB in use.” In this exercise, the 80 GB is part of the 200 GB, not an additional amount.

Keep the label attached to the number.

For this fictional report, allocated means space assigned to the workspace. Used means the part of that space currently occupied by its data. The report shows 200 GB allocated and 80 GB used at 10:00 UTC. Write both labels, or say “80 GB of the allocated 200 GB is in use.” Do not add them to make 280 GB. The report does not give a bill, a peak or a system-wide maximum.

Compare the examples

Allocated

The workspace has 200 GB allocated.

Used

At 10:00 UTC, 80 GB was in use.

Relationship

80 GB of the allocated 200 GB is in use.

Notice the difference

“We use 200 GB” loses the allocation label and can misreport actual use. “In use” describes consumption here; “available” would need a clear definition.

Question 1 of 3

The report shows 200 GB allocated and 80 GB used. Which amount is occupied by data?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. The report shows 200 GB allocated and 80 GB used. Which amount is occupied by data?

    80 GB

Used identifies occupied space in this report.

  2. Why should you not add 80 GB and 200 GB here?

The 80 GB is part of the allocated 200 GB.

These are related quantities, not two separate blocks to total.

  3. Can these two figures alone tell you the invoice amount?

No; pricing and billing details are not supplied.

A storage quantity is not a price or billing rule.

Put it into practice

Correct the stakeholder update

Report the 10:00 UTC snapshot: 200 GB allocated, of which 80 GB is used.

Original draft

We are using 200 GB, plus another 80 GB.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

At 10:00 UTC, the workspace had 200 GB allocated, with 80 GB in use.

This describes the report without predicting future use or recommending a capacity change.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is the difference 120 GB?

Yes, within these supplied definitions: 200 minus 80 is 120. Calling it available for a new workload would require checking what available means for that system.

For example

120 GB of the allocation is not currently used by this data.

Does allocated mean the system’s maximum?

Not automatically. Allocation and a maximum limit can be separate metrics. Preserve the label you were given.

For example

allocated space, used space, maximum size

Take it into your day

Allocated is not automatically used. Preserve the report’s definitions.
