Security handoffs: who owns the next action?

Your shift is ending, but an alert review is unfinished. The next analyst needs more than a forwarded message.

The short answer

Name the pending action, address its proposed owner and ask for confirmation: “Mira, the alert review is still pending. Please confirm you can take this review.” A sent message does not establish acceptance, and acceptance does not mean the work is complete.

Separate delivery, responsibility and completion.

Pending means not yet completed here. An action owner is the person responsible for following up, not the owner of the system. “I sent it to Mira” reports sending. “Mira confirmed she will take the review” reports acceptance. “Mira completed the review” reports completion. Use the statement your evidence supports. A polite request can name the person directly without pretending they have already agreed.

Read all answers and explanations
  1. You sent a request. Mira has not replied. Which update is supported?

I sent the review request to Mira.

Only sending is confirmed. Do not invent acceptance or completion.

  2. Mira replies: “I can take this review.” What is now confirmed?

    Mira accepted the review task.

She accepted responsibility. The reply does not report a result.

  3. Ask Mira to confirm whether she can take the pending review.

Mira, please confirm you can take this review.

This requests acceptance instead of reporting an unsupported completion.

Put it into practice

Repair the shift note

The alert review is unfinished. You sent Mira a request but have no reply. Preserve both facts.

Original draft

Review handed over to Mira and completed.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

The review is still pending. I sent Mira the request and am waiting for her confirmation.

The corrected note does not turn a request into a completed transfer or task.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Does owner mean the person who owns the system?

Not in action owner. Here it means the person responsible for the next action. Explain the term if your reader may interpret it differently.

What if there is no reply?

State that acceptance is unconfirmed and follow your team’s handoff or escalation process. Do not write that someone has agreed simply because you sent the request.

Take it into your day

A clear handoff names the action and makes acceptance visible.
