Security English: request read-only access

“I need access” does not tell the resource owner what you need to do. For a review, make the requested scope explicit.

The short answer

Write “Could you grant me read-only access to the sign-in log viewer for the approved review? I do not need edit access.” Read-only describes viewing without changing the resource. The sentence requests permission; it does not grant it.

Name the access level, resource and purpose.

Read-only modifies access: you want to inspect the resource, not edit it. Access to names the resource; for introduces the purpose. In this fictional situation, the review is approved but viewer access still needs the owner’s decision. Do not replace read-only with administrator access or assume that permission to view also covers sharing the data elsewhere.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Can I say view instead of read?

Yes, view is natural for describing the intended action. Keep read-only if it is the access-level label you need.

For example

I only need to view the sign-in logs.

Does read-only mean I may share the data?

The phrase describes editing restrictions, not sharing authorization. Do not add a sharing claim that the owner has not given.

For example

Please confirm whether sharing this report with the review team is permitted.

Take it into your day

Ask for a named scope; keep the request separate from permission granted.
