Finance English: MTD, YTD and the cutoff

Two figures can both be correct but cover different periods. A manager needs to know which dates your number includes.

The short answer

MTD means month-to-date; YTD means year-to-date. For a calendar-year report through June 12, 2026, MTD covers June 1–12 and YTD covers January 1–June 12. State the cutoff and confirm whether the year is calendar or fiscal.

The abbreviation needs a date range.

Month-to-date starts at the beginning of the stated month. Year-to-date starts at the beginning of the stated reporting year. Neither automatically means a completed month or year. A saved report’s cutoff may be earlier than today, so write it explicitly. A fiscal year can begin in a different month; do not silently assume January. Here all examples use the calendar year and include June 12.

Monthly range

MTD sales through June 12, 2026: June 1–12, 2026.

Calendar-year range

YTD sales through June 12, 2026: January 1–June 12, 2026.

Clarifying question

Does YTD refer to the calendar year or the fiscal year in this report?

Notice the difference

YTD is not a synonym for the last twelve months. Its start is tied to the named year.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Does to date always mean today?

In a current update it may. For a saved report, use the report’s stated cutoff; do not assume it changes every day.

For example

These YTD figures are through June 12, 2026.

Can YTD start after January 1?

Yes, if the report uses a fiscal year with a different start. State that start and the cutoff explicitly.

For example

Fiscal YTD covers April 1–June 12, 2026 in this report.
