IELTS Speaking Part 3: explain how a cause leads to an effect

IELTS Speaking Part 3 includes discussing broader issues and explaining ideas. Use this original town-transport question to plan a response in writing; this page does not assess your spoken performance.

The short answer

For a cause-and-effect answer, explain the link: “Later buses could help people attend evening classes because they would have a way to get home afterward.” The travel problem explains why bus hours could affect attendance.

Show the mechanism, not just the result.

“Later buses are helpful” is a claim. Explain what changes for people: they can get home after a class. Then connect that change to possible attendance. Use could or may when the result depends on other conditions; a bus service alone does not guarantee that everyone will attend.

A connected explanation

Original question

How might later bus services affect participation in evening activities?

Possible effect

Later buses could make evening classes easier to attend.

Link

People would have a way to get home after the class.

Combined answer

Later buses could make evening classes easier to attend because people would have a way to get home afterward.

Notice the difference

“Because they are helpful” repeats the claim. “Because people could get home afterward” gives the missing explanation.

Connect the chain

01

Change → practical consequence

later buses → a way home after class

02

a way home → easier participation

Question 1 of 3

Which reason explains why later buses could help attendance?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Which reason explains why later buses could help attendance?

Because people would have a way home after class.

A way home removes a practical travel difficulty. “Useful” repeats the claim, and “everyone” is unsupported.

  2. Which claim leaves room for other factors?

Later buses could help some people attend.

Could and some keep the claim limited. Attendance also depends on cost, interest and other circumstances.

  3. Which sentence develops the travel explanation?

Without a late bus, some learners may struggle to get home.

Difficulty getting home connects directly to evening attendance; seat color and a favorite subject do not.

Put it into practice

Replace a circular reason

Keep the possible effect, but explain how later buses help.

Original draft

Later buses could help people attend evening classes because later buses are helpful.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

Later buses could help people attend evening classes because people would have a way to get home afterward.

The explanation is relevant without claiming that transport is the only factor.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Must I always use because?

No. You can explain the connection in a separate sentence. What matters is a clear relationship, not one required connector.

For example

Later buses could help. They would give learners a way home after class.

Does this check my speaking level?

No. It checks choices about the content of an answer. It does not hear you or measure delivery, pronunciation or fluency.

For example

A useful content plan is preparation for speaking, not a speaking score.

Take it into your day

A useful reason explains the link instead of repeating the claim.
