IELTS Speaking: show a person’s quality with an example

“She is kind, nice and good” leaves the listener with little to picture. One relevant moment can make a person description much more specific.

The short answer

Do more than list adjectives. Name a quality, then give a short example that shows it: “My aunt is patient. When I struggled with a recipe, she explained each step again without rushing me.”

Quality → action that shows it.

Patient suggests that someone can take time without becoming annoyed. An example of explaining again calmly supports it. Reliable suggests that someone can be depended on; keeping a promise supports that quality. Choose the example because it fits your point, not just because it is a story about the same person.

Compare the examples

Patience

She explained each step again without rushing me.

Reliability

He promised to meet me at six, and he arrived on time.

Thoughtfulness

She noticed that I had no chair and brought me one.

Notice the difference

Use present tense for a quality you believe the person has now, and past tense for a completed example: She is patient. Last week, she helped me.

Which action best supports “My teacher is patient”?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Which action best supports “My teacher is patient”?

She explains the idea again calmly when I need help.

Explaining calmly when help is needed shows patience. Clothing and travel do not demonstrate that quality.

  2. Which detail best supports “My friend is reliable”?

He returned my book on the day he promised.

Keeping the agreed return date shows that you can depend on him in this example.

  3. Which continuation develops “My neighbor is thoughtful” most directly?

She noticed I was carrying heavy bags and held the door open.

The action shows noticing and responding to someone’s need. Repeating praise or giving only background does less to support the quality.

Replace a list with a relevant moment

Develop the aunt’s patience using this fact: you struggled with a recipe, and she explained the steps again calmly.

Original draft

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

My aunt is patient. When I struggled with a recipe, she explained the steps again calmly.

This is one possible wording. Keep the connection between the quality and the action when using your own example.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Do I need a long story for every adjective?

No. One short, relevant action can develop a point. Use the actual task and your available time to decide how much to add.

For example

He kept his promise and arrived on time.

Is quality plus example an official required formula?

No. It is a useful way to develop this kind of description. Follow the actual prompt rather than forcing every answer into one pattern.

For example

She is reliable. For example, she always returns borrowed things when she says she will.

Take it into your day

A relevant action makes a quality easier to understand.
