IELTS Speaking: explain a word you cannot remember
You remember using a colander, but the name disappears during your answer. You can still describe the tool and continue your point.
The short answer
Say what kind of thing it is and what it does. Add a feature that separates it from similar things: “a kitchen tool with holes that you use to drain pasta.” This communicates more than “that thing.”
Describe the meaning; do not invent a name.
Start with a category such as tool, container or device. Add a function with “that you use to…” and, when useful, a distinguishing feature. A tool for cooking is too broad; holes and draining pasta narrow it down. Use facts you know, then return to the point you were making.
Compare the examples
I used that thing in the kitchen.
I used a kitchen tool that you use to drain pasta.
It is a bowl with holes, so the water can run out.
You do not have to announce every forgotten word. A clear description can fit directly into your sentence.

Other accurate descriptions can work. Use words you can control, then continue your answer.
A little more clarity
Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Must I apologize for forgetting the word?
No. You can simply use a clear description. Avoid spending the rest of your answer explaining why you forgot.
I carried an insulated container for my coffee.
Should I add every possible feature?
Add enough accurate detail to make the meaning clear, then return to your main point. Do not invent technical details.
It has holes so the water can drain out.
Take it into your day
Category + function + a useful feature can carry the meaning.
