IELTS summaries: check the word type and the meaning

In an IELTS Academic Reading summary, a familiar word is not automatically the answer. You need a sentence that works and a statement the passage actually supports.

The short answer

Read the words around the gap. Decide what job the missing word must do, then check that its meaning is supported by the passage. A noun that fits the sentence can still be the wrong noun.

Grammar narrows the choice. Evidence decides the meaning.

Original passage: The canopy provides shade. Visitors sit comfortably beneath it. In The canopy gives visitors ___, shade names what visitors receive. Comfortably describes how an action happens and cannot fill that role here. But grammar alone is not enough: shelter is a noun too, yet a task requiring words from this passage does not allow you to replace shade with an outside word.

Compare the examples

Read the source

The canopy provides shade. Visitors sit comfortably beneath it.

Check the gap

The canopy gives visitors ___.

Keep grammar and evidence

The canopy gives visitors shade.

Notice the difference

A word ending is a clue, not a complete answer key. Check the whole phrase and the meaning; do not assume every gap after a verb needs the same word type.

Build the meaning step by step

01

Read around the gap

The panels make the room ___.

02

Find the matching evidence

The panels keep the room quiet.

03

Read all answers and explanations
  1. Text: The panels keep the hall quiet. Visitors speak quietly. Summary: The panels make the hall ___. Choose the word for the stated condition.

    quiet

Quiet describes the hall after make + object here. Quietly describes an action, not this condition.

  2. Text: Thick walls limit heat. Summary: The walls limit ___. Choose the supported completion.

    heat

Heat names what the walls limit. Thick describes the walls; walls would wrongly say they limit themselves.

  3. Text: Windows admit light. Panels reduce noise. Summary: The panels reduce ___. Which noun is supported?

    noise

All three are nouns, but the passage says the panels reduce noise. Grammar alone cannot choose the answer.

Put it into practice

Repair a summary with the source

Original text: Carpets absorb noise in the study room. Tall windows admit light. Repair the summary using the supported noun.

Original draft

The carpets reduce quiet.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

The carpets reduce noise.

The repair satisfies grammar and evidence without borrowing an unrelated noun from the passage.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

May I change a source word’s form?

If the task tells you to use words from the text, choose a word or phrase from it that fits as given. Do not invent a new ending just because it sounds grammatical.

For example

Source: shade. Answer: shade, not shady.

What if two nouns fit the gap?

Return to the relevant sentence in the passage. Check who does what and which detail the summary is restating. A grammatical fit is only one check.

For example

Panels reduce noise; windows admit light.

Take it into your day

A good completion passes both checks: sentence structure and passage meaning.
