Didn’t go, not didn’t went: past negatives
You planned a museum visit yesterday, but the building was closed. Explain what you and your friend did not do.
The short answer
For ordinary past actions, use did not or didn’t followed by the base verb: I didn’t go. Did carries the past marking, so went returns to go and bought returns to buy. The pattern is the same with I, she or they.
After didn’t, return to the base verb.
A positive past sentence can use went or bought. To make these actions negative, add didn’t and use go or buy instead. The base verb is the dictionary form, without -ed, -s or to.
One visit, positive and negative
I went to the museum.
I didn’t go to the museum.
She didn’t buy a ticket.
She didn’t buy uses the same didn’t as I didn’t go. Do not change it to doesn’t for a past action.
Turn the action into a negative
Start with the positive
She bought a ticket.
Restore the base form
didn’t + buy
Keep the person and event
