The short answer

For $16.05, say “sixteen dollars and five cents.” For $16.50, say “sixteen dollars and fifty cents.” The two digits after the decimal point give the number of cents. If a shortened price is unclear, repeat it with dollars and cents to check.

Keep the amount and its unit together.

One dollar contains 100 cents, so .05 is five cents and .50 is fifty cents. In a clear price context, people may shorten $16.50 to “sixteen fifty.” The full form is useful when accuracy matters or the context is unclear. This lesson uses US dollars throughout.

Same dollars, different cents

Five cents

$16.05 → sixteen dollars and five cents

Fifty cents

$16.50 → sixteen dollars and fifty cents

Check the shortened form

Sixteen fifty? Do you mean sixteen dollars and fifty cents?

Notice the difference
