TOEFL sentences: so clear that everyone understood

In sentence-building practice, recognizable words are not enough. Their order must show how the ideas connect: something was very clear, and understanding followed.

The short answer

Put the adjective between so and that: “The instructions were so clear that everyone understood them.” So clear gives the degree; the that-clause gives the result.

So + adjective + that + subject and verb.

The explanation was so clear gives a strong degree of clarity. That I understood it immediately adds what happened as a result. Keep the result as a complete clause with its own subject and verb. This differs from “I wrote notes so that I could remember”: that example explains the purpose of writing notes.

Compare the examples

Clarity and result

The instructions were so clear that everyone understood them.

Noise and result

The room was so noisy that I could not hear the speaker.

Interest and result

The talk was so interesting that I stayed until the end.

Notice the difference

Do not put that before the adjective: “so that clear” breaks this pattern. With such, you need a different structure, such as “such clear instructions.”

Read all answers and explanations
  1. Which order correctly links clarity to understanding?

The notes were so clear that I understood them.

So comes before clear; that introduces the complete result I understood them.

  2. In “The room was so noisy that I left,” what is the result?

    I left.

Leaving is the result; the high noise level is the condition leading to it.

  3. Choose a complete result: The talk was so interesting that ___.

    I stayed until the end

I stayed has a subject and verb. The other choices do not form the required result clause.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is that always necessary in everyday English?

It can sometimes be omitted in ordinary use. This activity supplies that as a piece, so keep it and arrange every piece correctly.

For example

The room was so noisy I could not concentrate.

Is this the same as so that for purpose?

No. Compare the meaning: a strong degree produces a result here. In the example below, writing clearly is an intentional action with a purpose.

For example

I wrote clearly so that everyone could read my notes.

Take it into your day

Keep the adjective after so and the result after that.
