TOEIC notices: what does except actually exclude?

A workplace notice has two rules: who must attend a session and what everyone needs at the building entrance. Keep them separate as you read the original notice below.

The short answer

Except removes a named person or group from the statement it qualifies. “All staff except those who completed last month’s orientation must attend orientation” exempts that group from this attendance requirement. It does not automatically remove a separate badge requirement or ban them from attending.

Attach the exception to the rule it modifies.

The except phrase belongs to the orientation sentence. People who completed last month’s session do not have to repeat it on Monday. The next sentence still requires every staff member to show a badge. Being exempt from a requirement is different from being forbidden to do the activity.

Original workplace notice

Orientation rule

All staff except those who completed last month’s orientation must attend Monday’s session.

Entry rule

Every staff member must show a staff badge when entering the building.

Two employees

Mina completed last month’s orientation. Noah did not.

Notice the difference

The exception names a specific group: staff who completed last month’s orientation. Do not broaden it to every returning employee or everyone who has worked there before.

Separate the rule from the exception

01

Identify the affected requirement

Must attend Monday’s orientation.

02

Identify the exempt group

Staff who completed last month’s orientation.

03

Retain the separate rule

Every staff member must still show a badge.

Question 1 of 3

Noah did not complete last month’s orientation. What must he do?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Noah did not complete last month’s orientation. What must he do?

Attend Monday’s session and show a badge when entering.

He is outside the exempt group, and the badge rule applies to every staff member.

  2. Mina completed last month’s orientation. Which conclusion is supported?

She is not required to attend Monday’s orientation.

The exception removes this attendance obligation. It does not state a building ban.

  3. If Mina enters the building, what does the notice require?

She must show a staff badge like every other staff member.

The badge sentence says every staff member. Its scope is not changed by the orientation exception.

Put it into practice

Repair an overbroad exception

Rewrite the summary so it preserves both rules.

Original draft

Mina completed last month’s orientation, so she does not need a badge.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

Mina does not have to repeat the orientation, but she must still show a badge.

But keeps the two requirements distinct. Except is not a signal to ignore the rest of the notice.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Does not required mean not allowed?

No. Those are different meanings. This notice removes an obligation but does not settle optional attendance.

For example

You do not have to attend. ≠ You must not attend.

Is except the same as in addition to?

No. Here except removes a group from the stated obligation; in addition to would add someone or something.

For example

All staff except Mina must attend.

Take it into your day

An exception changes its own rule, not every rule in the notice.
