AI English: explain what a pilot can and cannot do

A support manager asks whether a trial assistant can check a customer’s bill. In your fictional pilot, it can summarize supplied policy text, but it has no access to billing records. Your answer needs both facts.

The short answer

Say “In this pilot, the assistant can summarize supplied policy text, but it cannot access billing records.” In this pilot limits the claim. Can and cannot contrast the available and unavailable functions.

Put the limit beside the capability.

Can takes a base verb: can summarize, not can summarizes. Cannot and can’t are negative forms. Add in this pilot so the listener knows you are describing this setup. But connects a useful function with a real limit. Do not replace the limit with a vague promise such as it can handle everything.

Compare the examples

Available function

In this pilot, the assistant can summarize supplied policy text.

Unavailable function

It cannot access billing records.

Both together

In this pilot, the assistant can summarize supplied policy text, but it cannot access billing records.

Notice the difference

These capabilities are invented facts for this English exercise. They are not claims about a real product or about all AI systems.

Read all answers and explanations
  1. Choose the correct form: The assistant can ___ policy text.

    summarize

Use the base verb after can.

  2. Why add “In this pilot”?

To limit the description to this setup.

It sets the boundary of the claim.

  3. A manager asks about billing access. The pilot has none. Which answer addresses that directly?

It cannot access billing records in this pilot.

The requested function is answered without an unsupported promise.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is can’t acceptable instead of cannot?

Yes. Can’t is the usual contraction, especially in conversation. Cannot is useful when you want the negative to be easy to notice in writing. Keep the same limit either way.

For example

In this pilot, it can’t access billing records.

Why include in this pilot when describing a capability?

It limits the statement to the current trial. Without that context, a reader might interpret it as a claim about every version, deployment or future feature.

For example

In this pilot, the assistant can search the help articles only.

Take it into your day

Describe this pilot with a specific can and a specific cannot.
