Project English: ask for the input your task needs

You coordinate invitations for a project workshop. The invitation draft cannot be completed until the approved attendee list arrives. “Any update?” does not explain that connection.

The short answer

Use “We need X before we can Y.” Then ask the owner for a concrete update: “Could you confirm when the approved list will be ready?”

Name the input and the task it unlocks.

A dependency is a relationship between tasks: one needs something from another. In your message, name the missing item, explain the next action and ask the owner when it will be ready. Keep a requested date separate from an agreed deadline. A question is not a promise from the other person.

The dependency

We need the approved attendee list before we can finish the invitations.

The request

Could you confirm when the list will be ready?

A proposed time

Would Tuesday morning be possible?

Notice the difference

Use before we can only when the dependency is real. Do not label a preference as a blocker.

Read all answers and explanations
  1. Which message identifies both the missing input and the next task?

We need the approved list before we can finish the invitations.

It names the list and explains the task that depends on it.

  2. The owner has not confirmed a date. Which asks without inventing a commitment?

Could you confirm when the list will be ready?

Could you confirm asks for information; the other choices claim an agreement that does not exist.

  3. “We need approval before we can send the invitations.” What comes first?

    Getting approval.

Before makes approval the stated prerequisite.

Put it into practice

Rewrite a vague follow-up

You need the approved attendee list to finish invitations. Ask the list owner for an estimate, without blaming them.

Original draft

Any update? We are stuck.

Which edit meets the goal?

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Can I suggest a date?

Yes. Ask whether it is possible, and explain the need when useful. Do not write as though the person already agreed.

For example

Would Tuesday morning be possible?

Why name the input instead of asking Is it ready?

A named input tells the other team exactly which dependency you mean. It reduces the chance of a reply about the wrong file, decision or deliverable.

For example

Could you confirm when the final copy will be available?

Take it into your day

Missing input + next task + specific request.
