Workplace English: meet or miss a deadline
One short verb changes the result: we met the deadline, or we missed it.
Meaning in this lesson
meet / miss a deadline
Finish the required work on time / fail to finish it on time.
Example
“We met the deadline.”
We finished the required work on time.
The short answer
Meet a deadline means finish the required work by the required time. Miss a deadline means fail to do that. For a completed past situation, use met or missed: “We met the deadline” means we finished on time.
The result decides the verb.
Suppose a report is due Friday at 5 p.m. You submit the required report at 4 p.m. on Friday: you meet the deadline. If you submit it on Monday with no agreed extension, you miss the deadline. The word deadline gives meet a different meaning from meeting a person. Its past form is still met, not meeted.
Read the result, then the verb
We submitted the report before 5 p.m. on Friday. We met the deadline.
We submitted the report on Monday, without an extension. We missed the Friday deadline.
We need to meet the deadline tomorrow.
Met describes a past result. Need to meet describes what still needs to happen. Neither sentence tells us that the work was excellent—only whether it met the time requirement.

We missed the Friday deadline.
Changing met to missed corrects the reported result. The deadline did not change just because the work was completed later.
A little more clarity
Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Can I meet a deadline by finishing early?
Yes. You do not have to finish at the last possible moment. Completing the required work before the deadline also meets it.
What if the deadline was officially extended?
Compare completion with the new agreed deadline. You can meet the revised deadline even if you finish after the original date. Say revised or new when that distinction matters.
Take it into your day
On time: met the deadline. Too late: missed the deadline.
