Next update or recovery time? Write a clear service notice
A service is unavailable. Your team can send another update at 14:00, but it does not yet know when the repair will finish.
The short answer
“We will update you by 14:00 UTC” promises another message no later than that time. It does not promise that the service will be restored then. Name what the time refers to.
Attach the time to the action you can commit to.
Update means provide new information; restore service means make it available again. “By 14:00” gives a latest time, while “at 14:00” names a scheduled time. Include the time zone when readers work in different places. A recovery estimate should be labeled as an estimate and supported by the team’s current information.
Two different promises
We will provide another update by 14:00 UTC.
We expect service to be restored by 16:00 UTC.
The second sentence is a recovery estimate. Use it only when you have a basis for that estimate.

What does “We will provide another update by 14:00 UTC” commit to?
A message no later than 14:00 UTC.By gives a latest time for the update. The sentence makes no repair promise and allows an earlier message.
The repair time is unknown, but the next message is scheduled for 15:00 UTC. Which sentence fits?
Our next update will be at 15:00 UTC.This names the scheduled communication time without changing an unknown repair time into a fact.
What is missing from “Next update at 10:00” for readers in several countries?
The time zone.A time zone makes the stated time interpretable across locations. A cause is useful when known, but it is not the missing part of this time reference.
Put it into practice
Separate the message from the repair
Uploads are unavailable. The team is investigating and will send a message by 18:00 UTC. No recovery estimate is available. Choose a faithful notice.
Uploads will be fixed by 18:00.

The wording can vary, but the reader should be able to tell when information is due and what remains unknown.
A little more clarity
Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Can the next update say that investigation is continuing?
Yes. A promised update can explain that the status has not changed and state the next communication time. Do not invent progress just to have something new to say.
We are still investigating. Our next update will be at 15:00 UTC.
Why include a time zone in a service update?
A time such as 3 p.m. can mean different moments for an international team. Add the agreed time zone, and include the date when the day might be unclear. This makes the communication deadline easier to interpret.
Take it into your day
A useful next-update time can be clear even when the recovery time is unknown.
