Commas in a three-item list

Your packing note has three items, but without boundaries it is harder to scan.

The short answer

Separate the items with commas: a pen, a notebook, and a folder. The comma before the final and is the serial comma. We use that style in this lesson.

Count items, not words.

A blue pen is one item, not three. Put a comma after the complete item. In this lesson, also put one before and, not after it. For just two simple items, use a pen and a folder.

Compare the examples

Three items

Bring a pen, a notebook, and a folder.

Keep each phrase together

Bring a blue pen, a small notebook, and a folder.

Only two items

Bring a pen and a folder.

Notice the difference

Do not insert a comma between blue and pen: they belong to the same item.

Read all answers and explanations
  1. Choose the three-item list with a serial comma.

I packed socks, a shirt, and a hat.

Each item is separated. The final comma goes before and.

  2. Keep blue pen as one item. Use a serial comma.

Bring a blue pen, a notebook, and a folder.

The comma follows the whole phrase a blue pen.

  3. Choose the ordinary two-item list.

Bring a pen and a folder.

Two simple items join with and; no list comma is needed.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is the final comma always required?

No. Style guides differ. Use the style requested and check that the grouping is clear. This lesson practices the version with the serial comma.

For example

We need tape, paper, and scissors.

Does each list item have to be one word?

No. Items can be longer phrases. Identify the complete items first, then separate them clearly; do not insert commas between every word.

For example

We packed apples, crackers, and cheese.

Take it into your day

Keep phrases intact and use one consistent list style.
