Clarify a backfill date range in English

A backfill request names past dates, but the team is unsure whether the final day is included. Clear English can prevent a different scope from being assumed.

The short answer

Make the boundary explicit: “Include events at or after September 1, 2026, 00:00 UTC, but before September 4, 2026, 00:00 UTC.” The first instant is included; the second is excluded. Do not rely on “September 1–4” alone.

Name the time field, zone and endpoint rules.

Backfill work processes data for earlier periods. Here the fictional request selects records by event time—the time the event happened, not when the record arrived. At or after includes the starting instant. Before excludes the ending instant. Our window covers September 1, 2 and 3 in UTC, stopping as September 4 begins. Included and excluded describe boundaries; they do not say a job has already run.

Compare the examples

Included start

at or after September 1, 2026, 00:00 UTC

Excluded end

before September 4, 2026, 00:00 UTC

Clarifying question

Does the range include September 4, or stop before that day begins?

Notice the difference

Until and a bare date range can leave the exact boundary unclear. State the endpoint rule when it matters.

Question 1 of 3

The start is at or after September 1, 00:00 UTC. Is an event exactly at that instant included?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. The start is at or after September 1, 00:00 UTC. Is an event exactly at that instant included?

Yes, the starting instant is included.

At includes equality; arrival time is not the selected field here.

  2. The end is before September 4, 00:00 UTC. What about an event exactly then?

    It is excluded by before.

Before excludes the stated instant and later events.

  3. The request selects by event time. Which time controls inclusion?

    The time the event happened

Event time names occurrence, not message creation or report viewing.

Put it into practice

Clarify the backfill request

Select events from the start of September 1 through the end of September 3, 2026, in UTC. Make the end boundary explicit.

Original draft

Backfill September 1–4.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

Include events at or after September 1, 2026, 00:00 UTC, but before September 4, 2026, 00:00 UTC.

The sentence clarifies the proposed selection; it does not execute or confirm a job.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

What do inclusive and exclusive mean?

An inclusive endpoint is part of the range. An exclusive endpoint is not. Plain wording such as at or after and before can make those rules easier to read.

Can I omit UTC when everyone knows the dates?

Only when the time-zone convention is already unambiguous. For a cross-team request, stating the zone can prevent the same written date from selecting different instants.

Take it into your day

State which instants are included; do not leave the last day to guesswork.
