Efficient or effective: resources or results?
It worked is useful information. It worked without wasting materials tells us something more. These adjectives help you express the difference.
The short answer
Effective emphasizes getting the result you want. Efficient emphasizes working well with little waste of time, energy or other resources. A method can be both: it achieves the goal and uses resources well.
Effective highlights the goal. Efficient highlights how resources are used.
A cleaning method that removes the stain is effective at removing it. If it needs much more water and time than another successful method, it may be less efficient. A faster method that leaves the stain is not effective for that goal. Speed alone is not enough to praise a process as efficient.
Compare the examples
The method is effective at removing the stain.
The new method is more efficient: it gives the same result with less water.
The method is both effective and efficient.
These are not opposites. Saying effective does not mean wasteful, and saying efficient is not permission to ignore quality. The context tells us what evidence we have.

Put it into practice
Describe the comparison fairly
Both routines pack 50 boxes correctly. The new routine needs half as much tape. State the result and resource improvement without claiming better accuracy.
The new routine is better.
See a model answer
Both routines are effective, but the new one is more efficient in its use of tape.
The description is specific to tape use. It does not claim that every cost, speed or quality measure improved.

Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
What are the adverb forms?
Use effectively and efficiently to describe how an action is done. The focus on results or resource use remains.
The team used the materials efficiently.
Can an effective method be slow?
Yes, if it achieves the intended goal. Its speed matters to efficiency and may also matter to the goal itself if a time limit is part of that goal.
The search was effective, but it took longer than expected.
Take it into your day
State the result and the resources separately; praise both only when the evidence supports both.
