The short answer

In a notice, “effective June 10” means the rule begins to apply on June 10. Then check what the date applies to. If it controls bookings submitted on or after June 10, the submission date matters—not the date of the meeting.

Find the start date and the event it controls.

A notice can be issued before a change begins. Effective marks the start of the rule, while “on or after” explicitly includes that day. Check whether the rule applies to the date a booking is submitted, a service is used or another event. Do not swap one date type for another.

Original room-booking notice

Notice issued

Notice issued June 3.

New rule

Effective June 10, room bookings submitted on or after June 10 must use the online form.

Earlier bookings

Bookings submitted before June 10 remain valid and do not need to be submitted again.

Notice the difference

June 3 tells you when the notice was issued. June 10 tells you when the new submission rule begins. A booking submitted on June 9 is an earlier booking even if the meeting is later.

3 questions

Question 1 of 3

When does the new online-submission rule begin?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. When does the new online-submission rule begin?

    June 10

June 10 is the effective date. June 3 is the notice date; the rule includes June 10 itself.

  2. A booking is submitted on June 10 for a June 20 meeting. Which method is required?

    The online form

Submitted on June 10 satisfies on or after June 10, so the online form is required.

  3. A valid booking was submitted on June 9 for a June 20 meeting. Must it be submitted again?

No, the notice preserves earlier submitted bookings.

The notice uses submission date and explicitly preserves earlier bookings. The meeting date does not change that condition.

Put it into practice

Fix the date interpretation

Correct a note about a valid June 9 booking for a June 20 meeting.

Original draft

The June 9 booking must be submitted again because the meeting is after June 10.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

The booking remains valid because it was submitted before June 10.

The corrected note applies the actual wording instead of using the latest date mentioned.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Does effective always mean successful?

No. In an effective-date notice it means in force or applying from that date. Context determines the meaning.

For example

Effective June 10, use the online form.

Are after June 10 and on or after June 10 identical?

No. On or after explicitly includes June 10. After June 10 on its own refers to later than that date. Preserve the wording given.

For example

on or after June 10 → June 10 is included

Take it into your day

An effective date controls the stated event, and “on or after” includes the start day.
