Finance English: keep the currency and scale

A manager copies one number from a report. Without its heading, the amount can become a thousand times too small.

The short answer

If a table says “USD thousands,” a value of 1,250 means USD 1,250,000: USD 1.25 million. The heading supplies both currency and scale. Carry them into your sentence instead of writing only “1,250.”

The unit is part of the meaning, not decoration.

Thousands means multiply the displayed figure by 1,000. USD identifies US dollars; EUR identifies euros. A million is 1,000,000. “USD 1.25 million” and “USD 1,250,000” express the same amount. Changing USD to EUR changes the currency, not just the style. It is not a currency conversion.

Read all answers and explanations
  1. A USD thousands table shows 1,250. Choose the complete amount.

    USD 1.25 million

Multiply by 1,000 and retain USD: 1,250,000 US dollars.

  2. The source says USD. Which rewrite changes the currency?

    EUR 1.25 million

EUR denotes euros. The same digits do not establish an equivalent value.

  3. Under USD thousands, 80 means which amount?

    USD 80,000

    80 × 1,000 = 80,000; the scale comes from the heading.

Put it into practice

Repair the management note

The revenue row is 1,250 under USD thousands. Write the amount in millions without changing currency.

Original draft

Revenue was 1,250 dollars.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

Revenue was USD 1.25 million.

The rewrite changes the display, not the underlying amount.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is a dollar sign always enough?

Not when several dollar currencies are possible. Use a clear currency code or name when the context does not identify which dollar you mean.

What if the heading is missing?

Ask: “Are these figures in dollars, thousands of dollars, or millions?” Do not choose a scale because one amount seems more plausible.

Take it into your day

Keep the amount, currency and scale together.
