Game English: explain a placeholder and request its replacement
A teammate sees a gray cube in the scene. Before asking for better art, say what the cube represents and what should replace it.
Meaning in this lesson
placeholder
Something used temporarily in place of something else. In this lesson, a simple shape stands in for game art.
Example
“The gray cube is a placeholder for the lantern.”
The cube temporarily represents the lantern; it is not the intended lantern artwork.
The short answer
“The gray cube is a placeholder for the lantern. Could you replace it with the lantern model for the visual review?” The first sentence explains the current asset; the second requests a change.
Current asset + temporary purpose + requested replacement.
A placeholder is temporary; calling an asset a placeholder does not automatically mean it is broken. In our fictional scene, the gray cube stands in for a lantern. Replace A with B means remove A from that role and use B instead: replace the cube with the lantern model. Could you makes this a request to the artist. It does not say the artist has delivered the model or that anyone has approved final art.

Could you replace the cube with the lantern model?
We need the lantern model for the visual review.
In replace the cube with the model, the cube is the old item and the model is the replacement. Reversing them reverses the request.

Does placeholder mean broken?
No. It means something is temporarily standing in for something else. It may be doing its temporary job correctly.
The cube is a placeholder, not a broken lantern model.
Can I call the requested model final?
Only if that status is known. Requesting a model for review does not establish that it is final or approved. Use the status the team has actually confirmed.
