The short answer

For this fictional mechanic: “Hold the jump button to charge the jump. Release it to jump.” Hold means keep pressing; release means stop pressing. To plus a verb explains the purpose of each action.

Choose the exact input verb and name its purpose.

Press alone does not clearly tell the player to keep a button down. Hold makes the sustained action explicit. Release ends that hold. In this example, holding builds the jump’s charge; releasing triggers the jump. Start each instruction with a base verb and keep the actions in their actual order. In “to charge the jump,” to expresses purpose, not movement toward a place. In “Release it,” it refers to the jump button.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Do game instructions need please?

Usually a direct action verb is appropriate for a tutorial. It gives an instruction rather than making an impolite demand. Match the game’s established tone.

Should I name a specific key?

Use the correct control name for the player’s current setup. Do not assume everyone uses the same keyboard or default mapping. The example uses jump button to keep the language focus clear.

Take it into your day

Match the input verb to the mechanic, then explain the purpose.
