IELTS General Training: keep a letter’s tone consistent

Original situation: you are writing to Ms. Rivera, a course coordinator you have never met, to ask whether you can change your workshop date. Keep that relationship from the first line to the last.

The short answer

Choose the tone from the recipient and situation, then check the whole letter. A courteous opening does not fix a slangy request or an overly familiar closing. To a close friend, relaxed wording can fit; to an unfamiliar coordinator, clear neutral courtesy is a useful choice.

One reader, one consistent relationship.

Register means the level and style of language that fits a situation. For this unfamiliar reader, Dear Ms. Rivera, Could you confirm whether…? and Kind regards can work together. Hey, can you switch it for me? Thanks, buddy! suggests a more familiar relationship. Neither set is a universal formula; the task’s reader decides the fit.

Courteous opening

Dear Ms. Rivera,

Consistent request

Could you confirm whether I can move my booking to Friday?

Consistent closing

Thank you for your help. Kind regards, Alex

Notice the difference

Keep the purpose and facts while changing tone. A polite rewrite must not turn a request into a confirmed booking.

  1. For the unfamiliar coordinator and a neutral courteous letter, choose the matching closing.

Thank you for your help. Kind regards, Alex

The middle option fits this stated relationship. The others signal familiarity the situation does not establish.

  2. You want a relaxed message to a close friend. Which opening fits that chosen tone best?

Hi Mina, are you free to meet on Friday?

Hi Mina matches the requested relaxed relationship. The other openings sound official and distant for this goal.

  3. You are asking if a change is possible, not confirming it. Keep that fact.

Could you confirm whether I can change my booking?

Whether asks about possibility. The other replies assume the change already happened.

Put it into practice

Repair the mixed register

Write to the unfamiliar Ms. Rivera. Keep the request to move the booking to Friday; do not assume approval.

Original draft

Dear Ms. Rivera, Can you switch my booking to Friday, buddy? Love, Alex

Which edit meets the goal?

Dear Ms. Rivera, Could you confirm whether I can move my booking to Friday? Thank you for your help. Kind regards, Alex

This is one suitable version. Other courteous wording can work when it preserves the reader, purpose and facts.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Must every IELTS letter be formal?

No. General Training Task 1 may require personal, semi-formal or formal style. Use the relationship given in the task.

For example

Hi Mina, / Dear Ms. Rivera,

Is Kind regards the only acceptable closing?

No. It is one useful option here. Choose a closing consistent with the task and the rest of your letter.

For example

Thank you for your assistance.

Take it into your day

Match the whole letter to the relationship, not just its first line.
