IELTS General Training: make the letter’s purpose clear

In this original scenario, you want information about joining a community garden. You are writing to its coordinator, whom you have not met. Nothing has gone wrong: you are making an inquiry, not reporting a problem.

The short answer

Identify why you are writing and state it clearly near the beginning. If you need joining information, “I am writing to ask how I can join the community garden” fits. “I am writing to complain” changes the purpose, even though it is grammatical.

Let the situation choose the purpose verb.

Use ask or inquire for information, explain for an explanation, apologize for an apology, and complain for a complaint. These are options, not required formulas. For an unfamiliar coordinator, a clear courteous opening is suitable. A greeting alone does not explain why you are writing.

Keep the same inquiry

Greeting

Dear Garden Coordinator,

Purpose

I am writing to ask how I can join the community garden.

A useful next detail

Could you tell me whether any spaces are available?

Notice the difference

Do not apologize for damage or complain about service when the situation gives you no such facts. A memorized opening should never override the task.

Question 1 of 3

You need information about joining the garden. Which opening matches?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. You need information about joining the garden. Which opening matches?

I am writing to ask how I can join the community garden.

Ask matches the inquiry. The other openings invent a complaint or damage.

  2. Which next sentence develops the joining inquiry?

Could you tell me whether any spaces are available?

Available spaces are relevant to joining. Canceling an existing membership or requesting a refund invents a membership and changes the purpose.

  3. Choose another courteous opening with the same purpose.

I would like some information about joining the community garden.

This asks for joining information without using the same formula. The purpose matters more than memorizing one opening.

Put it into practice

Replace the wrong purpose

You have no complaint. You only want to learn how to join. Repair the opening.

Original draft

I am writing to complain about the community garden.

Which edit meets the goal?

I am writing to ask how I can join the community garden.

You can phrase the inquiry differently, provided the purpose and facts remain accurate.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Must every letter start I am writing to?

No. It is a useful option, not a compulsory formula. Choose wording that fits the relationship and purpose.

For example

I would like some information about joining the garden.

Is a clear opening enough for the whole task?

No. Continue with all requested information and an appropriate closing. This exercise isolates the purpose opening only.

For example

Could you also explain how new members apply?

Take it into your day

A good opening matches the purpose and recipient before it tries to sound impressive.
