ML English: explain what changed between runs

“I changed the settings” is not enough for a teammate comparing experiments. They need to know which value moved, where it started and what stayed the same.

The short answer

“We changed the batch size from 32 to 64 while keeping the learning rate at 0.01 and the dataset at version 3.” This states the change and two unchanged settings, not a performance result.

Changed from X to Y; kept Z unchanged.

In the supplied fictional log, run A uses batch size 32 and run B uses 64. Both use learning rate 0.01 and dataset version 3. From 32 to 64 gives the old and new values; by 64 would describe an increase of 64, which is different. While keeping connects the change to named conditions that stayed the same. Do not say everything else was identical unless the record supports that broader claim.

Compare the examples

Changed value

The batch size changed from 32 to 64.

Unchanged value

We kept the learning rate at 0.01.

Named version

The dataset remained at version 3.

Notice the difference

Changed does not mean improved. This log supplies settings, not accuracy, speed or other results.

Build the meaning step by step

01

Identify the change

we changed the batch size

02

Give both values

from 32 to 64

03

Name what stayed

while keeping the learning rate at 0.01 and the dataset at version 3

Read all answers and explanations
  1. Batch size was 32 and is now 64. Which wording matches?

It increased from 32 to 64.

From–to identifies the old and new values. The increase is 32, not 64.

  2. What does kept the learning rate at 0.01 mean?

The learning rate stayed at 0.01.

Kept at gives an unchanged value, not an amount of increase.

  3. Which conclusion is supported by this settings-only log?

Batch size changed; the two named settings stayed the same.

The log supports the stated change and two unchanged settings, not results or every possible condition.

Build it yourself

Build the change note

Report the supplied change for run B and both unchanged settings.

Use all four pieces, starting with In run B. Select a piece again to move it back.

Your note

Your chosen pieces will appear here.

See a model answer

In run B, we changed the batch size from 32 to 64 while keeping the learning rate at 0.01 and the dataset at version 3.

From–to records the change; while keeping introduces two named constants. The sentence does not claim an improved result.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Can I use increased by?

Yes, if you give the amount of increase. From 32 to 64 is an increase of 32. Giving both endpoints is often clearer in a change note.

For example

The batch size increased by 32, from 32 to 64.

Does while keeping mean the result is better?

No. It links the change to something maintained. Results need their own evidence.

For example

We changed one setting while keeping two others unchanged.

Take it into your day

Give old and new values, then name the unchanged conditions.
