TOEIC notices: check every return requirement

A customer points to the word unopened. The notice contains another requirement that you still need to check.

The short answer

If a notice requires an unopened item and an original receipt, check both separately. An unopened item alone is not enough to confirm eligibility. If the receipt is not mentioned, the answer may be “not enough information,” rather than yes or no.

And means you need both in this rule.

Break the rule into two checks: item unopened, original receipt presented. A stated failure of either check means this offer’s rule is not met. If one check has no information, do not guess. A sentence saying the customer bought the item does not prove they still have the original receipt.

Compare the examples

Original fictional notice

For this offer, we accept returns when the item is unopened and the customer presents the original receipt. Both requirements must be met.

Both supplied

Mina has an unopened item and presents the original receipt.

One missing detail

Leo has an unopened item. The message says nothing about his receipt.

Notice the difference

Unknown is different from a stated failure.

Under the notice above, which customer clearly meets both requirements?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Under the notice above, which customer clearly meets both requirements?

Mina: unopened item and original receipt.

Mina satisfies both. Leo fails the unopened check; Sara fails the receipt check.

  2. “Jae’s item is unopened.” No receipt information is given. What can you conclude?

We need receipt information before confirming both requirements.

No information about a receipt is not proof that one exists or does not exist.

  3. The notice says both requirements must be met. Which interpretation matches?

The item must be unopened and the original receipt must be presented.

The notice explicitly requires both conditions; neither is optional.

Put it into practice

Repair an unsupported approval

Use the same notice. A message says: “The item is unopened, but the customer has lost the original receipt.” Repair the conclusion.

Original draft

The return meets the rule because the item is unopened.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

The item meets the unopened condition, but the original-receipt requirement is not met.

Do not invent an exception for a sympathetic customer. An exception must appear in the supplied notice.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Does every return policy use these conditions?

No. These conditions belong only to this fictional practice notice. Read the exact rule in each text.

For example

This offer requires both an unopened item and an original receipt.

Should I treat missing information as no?

No. Keep unknown separate unless the text states the requirement is not met.

For example

No receipt is mentioned. / The customer has no receipt.

Take it into your day

Check all required facts; keep missing information separate from failure.
