TOEIC notices: what does within mean?

A time period in a notice can describe a limit, a duration, or a delay. The preposition tells you which.

The short answer

“Reply within two hours of receiving this message” means reply no later than two hours after receipt. An earlier reply is allowed. It does not mean wait exactly two hours or continue replying for two hours.

Within sets the outer limit.

Find what starts the clock: receiving the message, placing an order, or another stated event. Then add the interval. If a message arrives at 9:00 a.m. and asks for a reply within two hours, the latest point is 11:00 a.m. A 9:30 reply fits; a noon reply does not. Use the notice’s actual wording rather than assuming the period starts now.

Maximum interval

Please respond within two hours of receiving this message.

Duration

Later time

Notice the difference

Check units such as hours, calendar days, or business days. Do not invent weekend rules if the notice does not explain them. These examples use hours to keep the calculation clear.
