The short answer

Type in means to enter information using a keyboard. You can type in the code or type the code in. With it, say type it in. Typing the code does not by itself mean you have submitted a search.

Type in describes putting text into the field.

The information is the object: a code, a name or a message. A short noun object can come after in or between type and in. The pronoun it goes between them. To name the destination, you can also say type the code into the box.

Keep the same information; change the object wording

Noun after in

Please type in the tracking code.

Noun between type and in

Please type the tracking code in.

Pronoun between type and in

Please type it in.

Notice the difference

The in in type it in belongs to the action expression. It does not go before it in this pattern.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Can I name the box where the text goes?

Yes. Type the code into the box names the destination. Here into introduces the box; it does not replace the pronoun placement in type it in.

For example

Type the code into the box.

Does type in mean log in?

No. You may type information during login, but type in describes the entry action. Log in describes accessing an account. You can also type into a search box that needs no account.

For example

Type in the tracking code, then select Search.

Take it into your day

Type in the code and type the code in both work. With the pronoun, use type it in.
