Web English: observation or diagnosis?

A profile page says Saved, but reloading shows the old name. You need a useful handoff to the teammate checking the server.

The short answer

Write “In the browser, I see the success message, but the old name returns after reload. I haven’t checked the server logs yet.” This reports an observation and a limit; it does not claim the server caused the problem.

Say where you observed it and what you have not checked.

A browser shows the page and can send requests; a server processes requests and returns responses. A message visible in the page is one observation, not proof of the full saving process. In the browser locates your evidence. I haven’t checked ... yet states a missing check without blaming anyone. Then ask for a specific follow-up: Could you check the save request on the server side? Do not write The server is broken unless you have evidence for that diagnosis.

Compare the examples

Observation

In the browser, the old name returns after reload.

Limit

I haven’t checked the server logs yet.

Follow-up

Could you check the save request on the server side?

Notice the difference

“I haven’t checked” is different from “There is no error.” The first describes your knowledge; the second makes a claim about the system.

3 questions

Question 1 of 3

Read all answers and explanations
  1. You saw the old name on the page after reload. Which wording locates that observation?

In the browser, the old name returns after reload.

Only the first sentence describes what you actually saw.

  2. You have not inspected server logs. What is accurate?

I haven’t checked the server logs yet.

Unexamined evidence is unknown, not a clean result or a diagnosis.

  3. Which request gives the server teammate a focused check?

Could you check the save request on the server side?

This names the operation and side without asserting a cause.

Put it into practice

Improve the handoff

Observed: Saved appears, then the old name returns on reload. Server logs have not been checked.

Original draft

The server is broken. Fix it.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

In the browser, I see Saved, but the old name returns after reload. I haven’t checked the server logs yet. Could you check the save request on the server side?

This gives your teammate something specific to inspect without overstating what you know.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Why add yet?

Yet makes clear the check has not happened up to now. It does not promise a particular result.

For example

I haven’t checked the response yet.

Can I mention a possible cause?

Yes, if you label it as a possibility and keep it separate from observations. Do not invent evidence to support it.

For example

It might be related to the save request, but I haven’t verified that.

Take it into your day

Locate the observation, name the unchecked evidence and request a focused follow-up.
