Write button text that matches the action

A developer receives a button labeled “Continue.” The specified behavior is to save a draft and stay on the same page. What should the English label say?

The short answer

If the button only saves an unfinished application for later editing, “Save draft” describes its action. “Submit application” would imply a different step. Start with the action verb and add the object when it clarifies what will happen.

Describe the immediate action accurately.

Save keeps the draft for later use; submit sends it into the final process in this example. Draft tells the user the application is unfinished. An action label often uses the base verb: Save draft, not Saving draft. Saving draft may describe a process already underway. Continue can be suitable when the user moves to the next step, but it does not clearly name this save-only action. Match the label to the confirmed behavior, not to the action you hope the feature performs.

  1. The button saves an unfinished application for later. Choose the accurate action label.

    Save draft

Save draft identifies storage for later editing, not final submission or completion.

  2. Saving is currently underway. Which is a progress message?

    Saving draft…

Saving describes the ongoing process; saved describes completion.

  3. The action saves and stays on this page. Why is Save draft more informative than Continue?

It names the actual save action.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is Save draft the only valid wording?

No. Save as draft can also work. Choose wording that fits the surrounding interface and accurately describes the action.

Should every label be only two words?

No. Use enough words to make the consequence clear. Shorter is useful only when it does not hide important meaning.

Take it into your day

Use an accurate action label, and keep it distinct from progress or completion text.
