The format, explained
Reading and Listening
Work with everyday campus and academic material. The later part of an adaptive section can depend on earlier performance.
Writing and Speaking
Writing combines sentence building, email and discussion. Speaking uses repetition and a simulated interview. Open each skill guide for the task breakdown.
Timing and scores
ETS lists approximate base section times; instructions and adaptive variation affect the overall time. The 1–6 scale includes half bands. A comparable overall 0–120 score is also supplied during the two-year transition after January 2026.
Where to start practising
- Check the required test version and score with the institution receiving your results.
- Compare your practice material with the current task names before committing to a study plan.
- Practise both understanding information and giving a useful response; do not prepare only for reading long academic texts.
