Explain conflicting AI output requirements

Before building an AI feature, you notice two incompatible length rules for the same response. The product owner needs a precise question.

The short answer

State both constraints: “The brief sets a maximum of 100 words, while another line requires at least 150. These requirements conflict. Which should we revise?” This explains the problem without blaming a person or silently choosing a rule.

Describe the conflicting instructions, then request a decision.

A maximum of 100 permits 100 or fewer words. At least 150 requires 150 or more. One response cannot meet both under the same word-count method. While can contrast the two requirements here; it does not mean they happen at the same time. “Which should we revise?” asks the owner to resolve the conflict. It does not give you permission to discard either requirement.

Upper limit

a maximum of 100 words

Lower limit

at least 150 words

Which requirement should we revise?

Notice the difference

Conflict describes incompatibility here; it does not accuse someone of being difficult.

Build the meaning step by step

01

Quote the two limits accurately

The brief sets a maximum of 100 words, while another line requires at least 150.

Question 1 of 3

What does a maximum of 100 words allow?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. What does a maximum of 100 words allow?

    100 or fewer words

Maximum marks an upper limit, including the stated number.

  2. The same response must have at most 100 and at least 150 words. What is true?

    The two length requirements conflict.

No single count can be both 100 or less and 150 or more.

  3. Ask the owner to resolve the draft conflict without blaming them.

    Which requirement should we revise?

This requests an explicit decision rather than blame or an unapproved change.

Put it into practice

Write the clarification message

The draft requires no more than 100 words and no fewer than 150 for one response. Ask the product owner to resolve it.

Original draft

The model cannot follow your instructions.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

The brief allows at most 100 words but requires at least 150. Which requirement should we revise?

The corrected message addresses the specification before blaming model behavior.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Can I ask which requirement takes priority?

Yes, when the responsible person can resolve these draft requirements. Record the agreed revision; do not assume priority from the order of the sentences alone.

Are different requirements always conflicting?

No. “At most 100 words” and “use three bullet points” may both be possible. Explain the actual incompatibility instead of calling every difference a conflict.

Take it into your day

Explain the incompatibility and request a decision before changing the brief.
