Associated with or caused by? Describe a data pattern

In a fictional dataset, larger branches tend to receive more support calls. The chart shows a relationship, but it does not explain why it occurs.

The short answer

“X is associated with Y” describes a relationship. “X causes Y” says X produces an effect. A pattern in a chart alone does not establish that cause.

Describe the pattern before proposing an explanation.

“Larger branches tended to receive more calls in this dataset” reports the observed pattern. “Larger branches caused more calls” makes a causal claim. Branch size might relate to other factors, such as customer numbers. Those are possible explanations to investigate, not facts established by the chart.

A pattern and its limit

Association

Larger branches were associated with more support calls in this dataset.

Limit

This pattern alone does not establish that branch size caused the increase.

Notice the difference

Tended to describes a general pattern, not a statement about every individual branch.

Make a bounded claim

01

Name the relationship

Higher staffing levels were associated with more completed requests.

02

Keep the limit

The data alone do not tell us whether staffing caused the difference.

  1. Only a chart is available: branches with more customers tend to receive more calls. Which sentence fits?

More customers were associated with more calls in this dataset.

The sentence describes the stated relationship and dataset. The chart alone does not prove a cause.

  2. What does “Larger branches tended to receive more calls” mean?

That was the general pattern, with possible exceptions.

Tended to expresses a pattern rather than an exception-free rule or a causal explanation.

  3. Which phrase makes the strongest causal claim?

    was caused by

Was caused by states a cause. The other phrases can describe an observed relationship without establishing why.

Put it into practice

Repair a chart caption

The data show that teams with more training hours tended to resolve more requests. No causal analysis has been done. Choose an accurate caption.

Original draft

Extra training caused every team to resolve more requests.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

In this dataset, more training hours were associated with more resolved requests. This alone does not establish a cause.

Other clear wording can report the association. A possible explanation can be labeled as a hypothesis for further investigation.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Is because always wrong in a data report?

No. Use it when the explanation is supported. The problem is using it to turn a relationship alone into a proved cause.

For example

We need more evidence before saying the difference occurred because of training.

Can I use “always” to describe a general pattern?

Only when the evidence supports every case covered by your statement. A tendency can have exceptions. “Tended to” is useful when you mean a pattern in the observed data, rather than a rule with no exceptions.

Take it into your day

An association is worth reporting without pretending it proves a cause.
