Data English: say who a survey percentage describes
A product manager wants a summary of a feedback survey. Eighty people answered the channel-preference question, and 48 chose email. You know their answers; you do not know every customer’s preference.
The short answer
Write “Of the 80 respondents, 48 preferred email updates.” You can add “That is 60% of respondents.” This describes the people who answered, not automatically every customer.
A percentage needs a clearly named group.
Respondents are the people who answered. Of the 80 respondents names the whole group used for this count; 48 is the part. Here 48 divided by 80 is 60%. Keep of respondents attached to the percentage. Changing it to of all customers widens the claim beyond these supplied facts. This exercise uses raw counts, not a weighted population estimate.
Compare the examples
Of the 80 respondents, 48 preferred email updates.
That is 60% of respondents.
Among the people who answered this question, email was the most common choice.
These survey figures are invented. All 80 people in this example answered the same preference question; the lesson makes no claim that they represent the whole customer base. Each person chose one option.

60% of respondents.48 ÷ 80 = 60%, and the supplied group is respondents.

Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Can I use among instead of of?
Yes, with a natural sentence: “Among the 80 respondents, 48 preferred email.” Both identify the relevant group here. Keep the total and result unchanged.
Among the 80 respondents, 48 preferred email.
Can I call these respondents all customers?
Only if the evidence actually supports that description. A group of respondents is not automatically the entire customer population. Keep the group label as specific as the data allows.
Of the 80 respondents, 48 preferred email.
Take it into your day
Keep the number, the total and the respondent group together.
