Security English: clarify an access request
A colleague writes, “I need temporary access urgently.” You still do not know the work involved or what temporary means. Ask two concrete questions before passing the request to the owner.
The short answer
“Could you explain which task requires access to the reporting workspace and how long you need it? Please include the proposed start and end dates.” This asks for information, not credentials, and does not grant access.
Purpose explains why; duration explains how long.
Which task requires access asks for the work the person needs to do. How long you need it asks for duration. When you need it asks about timing, so proposed start and end dates can clarify the whole window. In a polite indirect question, write “Could you explain how long you need it?” rather than “Could you explain how long do you need it?” The owner’s decision remains separate.
Compare the examples
Which task requires access to the reporting workspace?
Could you confirm how long you need access?
I’ll pass these details to the workspace owner for review.
Urgent is not a duration. Temporary does not name an end date. “I’ll pass this on for review” does not mean “Your access is approved.”

Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Are when and how long interchangeable?
No. When asks about the time; how long asks about duration. Start and end dates can make both clear.
When should access start, and how long is it needed?
Does a complete explanation mean approval?
No. The explanation gives information for the responsible person’s review. The decision follows the actual process.
The request is ready for review, not yet approved.
Take it into your day
Clarify the task and time window; keep approval separate.
