Finance English: explain a one-time cost
A manager sees a higher cost total and asks whether that increase will happen every month. Your note should identify the setup fee without promising next month’s result.
The short answer
State the full total, then the included item: October costs were $8,000, including a one-time setup fee of $3,000. One-time means once-only here. It does not mean the fee is absent from the total.
Describe the item and keep the total visible.
One-time modifies fee or cost to describe a once-only item. Recurring describes an item that repeats; say monthly or annually if that frequency is known. Including means the item is inside the total. Excluding gives a different comparison basis, so label it explicitly and retain the original total. Use is not expected to recur when that is the actual forecast; it is weaker than will never recur.
Compare the examples
October costs were $8,000, including a one-time setup fee of $3,000.
Excluding that fee, October costs were $5,000.
The setup fee is not expected to recur next month.
The label one-time does not erase an actual cost. Nor does it prove that all future costs will stay unchanged.
Build the meaning step by step

Read all answers and explanations
Costs were $8,000, including a $3,000 setup fee. Which is correct?
The $3,000 is already part of the $8,000.Including places the fee inside the stated total; do not add it again.
Does recurring by itself mean monthly?
No, it means repeated; the frequency needs more information.Repeated is the core meaning. Monthly is a separate frequency detail.
The team expects no setup fee next month, but has not guaranteed it. Which wording fits?
The fee is not expected to recur next month. Not expected states the forecast without promising or denying the past cost.
Put it into practice
Repair the manager’s summary
September total: $5,000. October total: $8,000, including a $3,000 setup fee identified in the report as one-time. No future total has been confirmed.
Our costs have permanently increased by $3,000 a month.
See a model answer
October costs were $8,000, including a one-time setup fee of $3,000; September costs were $5,000.
A separate excluding-the-fee comparison may be useful, but it must say what was excluded and keep the full total available.
A little more clarity
Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Does one-time mean one month?
No. It describes occurrence, not duration. A fee charged once could relate to work covering several months.
It is a one-time fee, not a monthly fee.
Why write one-time with a hyphen?
Before fee or cost, the two words work together as an adjective. Compare paid one time, where the words describe how often payment happened.
a one-time fee / a fee paid one time
Take it into your day
Name the total, name the one-time item and qualify any future expectation.
