IELTS Academic Task 1: choose the main pattern for an overview

An overview tells the reader what stands out across the information. It does more than repeat one number.

The short answer

For an IELTS Academic Task 1 data overview, identify the main trend or comparison and state it accurately. If both figures rise but one rises much more, that contrast may be your main message. Do not add a reason the data does not show.

Find the pattern before choosing the figures.

Imagine a table showing two libraries’ annual visitor totals, in thousands. North Library rises from 20 in 2020 to 50 in 2025; South Library rises from 40 to 45. Both increase, but North increases more and overtakes South. Those linked changes give the overview a clear focus. Exact figures can then support that message in the detailed part of a report.

One dataset, three different jobs

Original practice data

Annual visits (thousands), 2020 → 2025: North Library 20 → 50; South Library 40 → 45.

Overview: the main comparison

Overall, visits increased at both libraries, but North Library grew more sharply and became the busier of the two.

Detail: evidence for that comparison

North Library’s annual visits rose from 20,000 to 50,000.

Notice the difference

The table shows visits, not the reasons for the changes. “North became busier because it opened a café” would invent information.

Using the library data above, which sentence summarizes the main changes?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Using the library data above, which sentence summarizes the main changes?

Both libraries gained visitors, with a much larger increase at North Library.

The first sentence combines the shared rise with the main difference. The second is a true isolated figure; the third invents a cause.

  2. What is the problem with “North Library had 20,000 visits in 2020” as the whole overview?

It gives one detail without the overall change or comparison.

The number is correct, but the reader still cannot see how the two libraries changed. A personal opinion is not needed.

  3. Which claim goes beyond what the original table tells us?

North gained visitors because its opening hours improved.

The table gives visitor totals only. It supplies no information about opening hours or why visits rose.

Put it into practice

Replace a detail with an overview.

New original data: online bookings rise from 30% to 60%; phone bookings fall from 70% to 40%. Choose the overview that captures both trends without adding a cause.

Original draft

Online bookings were 30% at the start.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

Overall, online bookings increased while phone bookings declined.

The revised sentence summarizes both directions. A detailed paragraph can then give the percentages. This is a useful overview sentence, not a complete report.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Are numbers forbidden in an overview?

No absolute ban is being taught here. The point is to select the big picture rather than list every figure. In these small examples, a clear overview works without exact numbers.

Is one overview sentence a complete Task 1 answer?

No. This activity isolates one skill. A full response must meet the actual task requirements and develop the information with relevant detail.

Take it into your day

An overview selects the main pattern; the details prove it.
