AI English: clarify what an acceptable output means

The product lead says, Make the summary good enough for the pilot. You need to know what they will check. Ask about the required information before promising a result.

The short answer

Ask for a checkable meaning: When you say a good summary, what must it include? Then confirm: So each action item must include the owner stated in the notes. Is that right? A proposal becomes an agreed condition only after confirmation.

Turn a vague judgment into a confirmed condition.

An acceptance criterion describes a condition the work must meet. Good, accurate and useful may be goals, but they leave room for different interpretations. Ask what must appear, what must not be added and how the team will check it. Repeat the proposed condition with So …, is that right? This confirms shared meaning without inventing a target or claiming the output already passes.

Compare the examples

Clarify the requirement

When you say a good summary, what must it include?

Ask how it will be checked

How will we check that the action owners match the notes?

Confirm the condition

So each action item must include the owner stated in the notes. Is that right?

Notice the difference

A criterion is one condition; criteria is plural. One agreed condition is not proof that every quality or safety requirement has been met.

Build the meaning step by step

01

Ask what the vague word means

What must a good summary include?

02

Identify an observable condition

Each action item must include the owner stated in the notes.

03

Confirm before treating it as agreed

Is that the criterion you want us to check?

A lead says Make it useful. Which reply clarifies the output requirement?
Read all answers and explanations
  1. A lead says Make it useful. Which reply clarifies the output requirement?

What information must the summary include to be useful for this task?

Ask for task-specific information rather than repeating the adjective or inventing a threshold.

  2. Which statement is directly checkable against meeting notes?

Every action owner in the summary matches the owner stated in the notes.

Named owners can be compared; the other judgments need clearer definitions.

  3. You ask Could we use this criterion? Has it already been agreed?

No, you have proposed it and still need confirmation.

A proposal is neither agreement nor a passing result.

Put it into practice

Confirm the action-owner requirement

A product lead wants an acceptable meeting summary. First ask what must be included, then confirm the specific condition they give.

  1. Product lead

Make the meeting summary good enough for the pilot.

Ask for a concrete requirement.
See a model answer
  1. Lead

Make the meeting summary good enough for the pilot.

  2. You

When you say good enough, what must the summary include?

  3. Lead

Each action item must include the owner stated in the notes.

  4. You

So each action item must include the owner stated in the notes. Is that right?

The first question invites detail; the confirmation checks shared meaning. Neither claims that testing has already succeeded.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

What if the notes do not name an owner?

Ask how the team wants missing information handled. Do not silently invent a name to satisfy the wording.

For example

How should the summary handle an action with no named owner?

Is one criterion enough to accept the whole system?

Not necessarily. This conversation clarifies one condition. The team may have other required checks before acceptance or release.

For example

What other criteria must we check before the pilot?

Take it into your day

Ask, restate and confirm before calling a criterion agreed or passed.
