Data engineering English: explain a field rename
A field’s name is changing in a new export. The person using that export needs more than We cleaned up the names. They need to know which mapping to check and when.
The short answer
Give the direction and scope: In the planned export v2, client_id will be renamed to customer_id. The values and data type will stay the same. Please check your report’s field mapping before using v2.
State old to new, then name the affected version.
Renamed to introduces the new name. Renamed from … to … gives both ends explicitly. Planned and will be show that the change is not yet live. Separate what changes from what is verified to stay the same: a field name, its values and its data type are different properties. Even if values stay the same, a report may still refer to the old field name. Ask for the relevant mapping check instead of saying nothing will break.
Compare the examples
The field will be renamed from client_id to customer_id.
This rename is planned for export v2; export v1 is unchanged.
Please check your report’s field mapping before using v2.
Same values does not mean no consumer changes are needed. A renamed key can affect code or reports that refer to its old name.
Build the meaning step by step
Name the mapping
client_id will be renamed to customer_id.
Name the version
The change is planned for export v2.
Request the relevant check
Please check references to the old field name.

Read all answers and explanations
client_id will be renamed to customer_id. Which is the new name?
customer_idTo points to the new name; client_id is the old one.
The change is planned for export v2. What is supported?
It is a planned change, not confirmation that it is live now.Planned states intent; it does not establish deployment or removal.
Values and data type stay the same. Can you promise no report changes are needed?
No, references to the old name may still need checking. The name is itself something a consumer can depend on.
Put it into practice
Write the handoff note
Plan: export v2 changes client_id to customer_id. Values and type stay the same. Export v1 stays unchanged. Ask the report owner to check mappings before using v2.
We changed the data, so everything should work.

In the planned export v2, client_id will become customer_id; values and type stay the same. Export v1 is unchanged. Please check your mappings before using v2.
A precise note separates rename, data meaning and deployment status.

Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Does rename mean the values changed?
Not by itself. It means a new name. State any value or type change separately, and only say unchanged when that has been verified for the plan.
Only the field name changes in this plan; the values remain the same.
What if I do not know which reports use it?
Ask the owner to identify references. Do not turn missing knowledge into a claim that nothing is affected.
Could you confirm whether any of your reports reference client_id?
Take it into your day
Give the mapping, scope, known unchanged properties and required check.
