Report an estimated range without making a promise

A manager needs a number for planning. Your supplied estimate is a range, so a single confident number would hide useful information.

The short answer

Say: “For planning, we estimate 80 to 120 support requests next week. The actual total may fall outside that range.” This preserves a supplied estimate without promising exactly 100 or a guaranteed maximum of 120.

An estimate describes uncertainty; it is not a commitment.

A range gives a lower and an upper value. Use from 80 to 120 or between 80 and 120, keeping the pairs from…to and between…and. Add what you are counting and when: support requests next week. We estimate labels the statement as an assessment rather than a known future count. The midpoint, 100, is not automatically the most likely value. An estimated upper endpoint is not a guaranteed ceiling.

Range with from

from 80 to 120 requests

Range with between

between 80 and 120 requests

Estimate status

We estimate 80 to 120 support requests next week.

Notice the difference

May fall outside means the range is not an absolute boundary.

Question 1 of 3

Choose the standard between range pattern.
Read all answers and explanations
  1. Choose the standard between range pattern.

    between 80 and 120 requests

Between pairs with and; from pairs with to.

  2. A supplied planning range is 80–120. What can you safely say about 100?

It is the midpoint, not automatically a prediction.

The midpoint is arithmetic; probability or certainty requires additional evidence.

  3. The estimated range is not guaranteed. Choose a matching limitation.

The actual total may fall outside that range.

May fall outside preserves the uncertainty without changing the supplied range.

Put it into practice

Repair the planning note

The supplied planning estimate is 80–120 support requests next week, with no guaranteed bounds. Preserve that information.

Original draft

We will receive exactly 100 requests next week.

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

Does every range have a confidence level?

No. A planning range may be a rough assessment. Use a technical interval label only when its method and interpretation are actually established.

Can the update be shorter?

Yes: “Planning estimate: 80–120 support requests next week; actual demand may be outside this range.” Keep the status, unit, time and limitation.

Take it into your day

Preserve an estimated range without inventing certainty or probability.
