Data English: mean or median?

A product manager asks you to label a chart of five sessions. “Average time” leaves the intended measure unclear.

The short answer

Mean is the arithmetic average: total divided by count. Median is the middle value after sorting; with an even count, average the two middle values. Say “The median duration for these five sessions was 4 minutes,” not “Everyone spent 4 minutes.”

Name the measure before interpreting it.

Our fictional durations are 2, 3, 4, 5 and 16 minutes. The total is 30, so the mean is 6 minutes. The sorted middle value is 4, so the median is 4 minutes. In a data discussion, mean is a noun naming a statistic; it does not mean “meaning.” Average often refers to the mean, but ask which measure the writer intends if the label is vague. Neither number says that every session lasted that long.

Compare the examples

Mean caption

The mean duration for these five sessions was 6 minutes.

Median caption

The median duration for these five sessions was 4 minutes.

Clarify a label

By average, do you mean the arithmetic mean or the median?

Notice the difference

The mean can be a value that no individual observation has. None of these five sessions lasted 6 minutes.

  1. For 2, 3, 4, 5 and 16 minutes, the total is 30. Which is the mean?

    6 minutes

30 divided by five is 6.

  2. The same sorted values have which median?

    4 minutes

4 is the middle of the five ordered observations.

  3. Which statement preserves what the supplied median tells us?

The median duration for these five sessions was 4 minutes.

Name the measure and observed group without claiming every value is identical.

Put it into practice

Repair a chart caption

The chart reports the median of these five durations: 2, 3, 4, 5 and 16 minutes.

Original draft

Every user spends 4 minutes.

Which edit meets the goal?
See a model answer

The median duration for these five sessions was 4 minutes.

The caption describes a supplied summary, not identical individual behavior.

A little more clarity

Common questions

A few useful details before you move on.

What if there are four values?

For the median, sort them and average the two middle values. For 2, 4, 8 and 10, the median is 6.

For example

The median is (4 + 8) / 2 = 6.

Is median always better?

No. The useful measure depends on the question and data. Here your task is to label the given measure accurately.

For example

This chart reports the median, not the mean.

Take it into your day

Keep the statistic, unit and group; do not turn a summary into an “everyone” claim.
