Data science English: inconclusive is not no effect
Your analysis lead labels a button-text experiment inconclusive. A product manager asks, “So it made no difference?” Your reply should preserve the uncertainty in the supplied conclusion.
Meaning in this lesson
inconclusive
Not giving a clear enough answer to settle the question.
Example
“The evidence is inconclusive.”
The question remains unresolved; neither outcome is established by this statement.
The short answer
“The result is inconclusive” does not mean “the change has no effect.” Say: “With the current evidence, we cannot yet determine whether the change affects completion.”
Unresolved is different from a confirmed negative.
Inconclusive describes the strength of the conclusion, not proof that the effect is zero. Cannot yet determine whether… keeps both possibilities open. With the current evidence limits the statement to what is available now. It does not promise that more data will produce a positive result. Here, the analysis conclusion is supplied; you are practicing how to communicate it, not calculating it.
Compare the examples
The button-label experiment was inconclusive.
We cannot yet determine whether the new label affects completion.
That does not establish that the effect is zero.
“We found no clear evidence of an effect” is not the same as “We proved there is no effect.” Keep the evidence claim separate from the reality claim.

The supplied analysis is inconclusive. Which summary matches?
The evidence does not yet settle the question.Inconclusive leaves the question unresolved rather than proving either result.
Does cannot yet determine promise a positive result later?
No; it describes the present limit.Yet marks the current state, not the direction of a future conclusion.
Which phrase limits the claim to the available evidence?
with the current evidenceCurrent evidence specifies the basis; the other choices expand beyond it.
Put it into practice
Explain it to the product manager
The analysis lead says the button-label experiment is inconclusive. Explain that conclusion to Mia without adding a decision.
- Mia
So this proves the new label has no effect?

- Mia
So this proves the new label has no effect?
- You
Not quite. The result is inconclusive; it does not establish that the effect is zero.
- Mia
What can we tell the design team?
- You
With the current evidence, we cannot yet determine whether the new label affects completion.
This written dialogue practices a spoken explanation. It does not grade pronunciation or perform the statistical analysis.

Common questions
A few useful details before you move on.
Does inconclusive mean useless?
No. It describes an unresolved conclusion. It does not by itself judge the value of the work or decide what the team should do next.
The result is inconclusive; the next step needs discussion.
Can I say we do not know yet?
Yes, but name what remains unknown so the listener understands the specific question.
We do not yet know whether the new label affects completion.
Take it into your day
Inconclusive preserves uncertainty; no effect claims a definite result.
